THE POINT’s teen community leadership group A.C.T.I.O.N. engages stipend youth activists three times per week from the community who work to identify social and environmental justice issues facing Hunts Point with the goal of developing ongoing youth-led solutions. A.C.T.I.O.N. members receive training in three core areas of leadership, media and environmental policy. The program provides strong academic support throughout the school year and assists with summer internship placement for all A.C.T.I.O.N. participants. |

Urban Farming
A.C.T.I.O.N. has launched an urban agriculture project! In partnership with The Growing Connection, A.C.T.I.O.N. is developing earth boxes to grow fresh produce in and for the South Bronx community.
North Brother Island Initiative
A.C.T.I.O.N. partners with the NYC Audubon Society and the NYC Department of Parks and Recreation Natural Resource Group (NRG) to help lead heron, egret and ibis habitat restoration efforts on the nearby North Brother Island and other South Bronx restoration activities.
Anti-Tobacco Campaign
Since 2005, A.C.T.I.O.N. has conducted asthma awareness anti-tobacco campaigns with support from groups including the American Lung Association (ALA) of New York, the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation’s Tobacco Policy Change: A Collaborative for Healthier Communities and States, NYC Coalition for a Smoke-Free City, Public Health Solutions and the NYC Department of Health and Mental Hygiene. THE POINT is proud to announce on October 14th, 2009, the NYC Council passed Intro 433-A, prohibiting the sale of flavored tobacco products in NYC, including cigars, little cigars and smokeless tobacco. A.C.T.I.O.N. in partnership with the American Lung Association originally introduced this bill in 2006. Go A.C.T.I.O.N.!
Transportation Equity
A.C.T.I.O.N. participates in two coalitions advocating for transportation equity, the Pratt-led Communities United for Transportation Equity (COMMUTE) and The Campaign for NY's Future (CFNY). In addition, A.C.T.I.O.N. is partnering with Columbia University's Built Environment and Health Group in a Geographic Information Systems (GIS) mapping project. A.C.T.I.O.N. students will help demonstrate how transportation equity issues limit access to resources for active living and thus contribute to high rates of asthma, diabetes and obesity in the Hunts Point community.
