THE BIG READ AT THE POINT

THE POINT is proud to announce that is has been awarded renewed support by the National Endowment for the Arts to lead the 2012 Hunts Point Big Read! In honor of National Reading Month in March 2012, THE POINT will encourage literary reading in the South Bronx and organize the Hunts Point community to read In the Time of Butterflies by Julia Alvarez. THE POINT is already meeting with project partners including El Museo del Barrio, La Casa Azul Bookstore and the Hunts Point branch of the NY Public Library to plan for this community-wide event.

JULIA ALVAREZ’S
In the Time of the Butterflies

A work of historical fiction, In the Time of the Butterflies honors the lives of Patria, Minerva, and María Teresa Mirabal, who became icons of freedom after their assassination in 1960. Their role in the Dominican Republic’s underground resistance helped topple the brutal, decades-long dictatorship of Rafael Trujillo.

The Big Read is a program of the National Endowment for the Arts in partnership with Arts Midwest. For more information, visit www.neabigread.org.
