BARRETTO POINT PARK SURVEY RESULTS
Activists Coming to Inform Our Neighborhood (A.C.T.I.O.N) is a teen community leadership program of THE POINT CDC. The program engages stipended young people who work to identify social and environmental
justice issues facing the Hunts Point section of the South Bronx with the goal of creating and implementing ongoing youth-led solutions. Working together with
community members and fellow community organizations, A.C.T.I.O.N. serves as a community link for the re-envisioning of Hunts Point. We implement grassroots techniques in community planning and policy, and disseminate such information to the community. A.C.T.I.O.N. serves as role models for positive change for the current generation in Hunts Point.

The key components of A.C.T.I.O.N. are: Advocacy, Academic Support, Media Training, and Youth Development.
Advocacy - Partcipants learn the fundamentals of environmental and social justice, study current issues in the South Bronx, work to inform others in the community about these issues as well as work toward a solution.
Academic Support - All participants' progress is monitored closely and tutoring is provided. Through collaboration with The Point's education staff and other organizations, all juniors and seniors receive SAT preparation and help with the college application process. A minimum GPA of 75% is required to be a
part of A.C.T.I.O.N.

Media Training - ACTION youth take part in a media and technology course, where they are instructed in computer literacy, web design, mobile media and wireless
communication for social transformation and community empowerment of their Hunts Point neighborhood. The class is taught by media instructor Emilia Wiles, MFA candidate in Communication, Design and Technology at Parsons New School for Design.
Youth Development - Participants will become leaders by gaining experience and assistance in public speaking, job training, resume writing, and communication skills and effectiveness.
The current projects/initiatives that A.C.T.I.O.N. has been working on are:
• Pass legislation to ban the sale of flavored-tobacco products in New York City
• Creation of an online magazine addressing teen and family issues
• Research and dissemination of information to residents on proposals by businesses
and city agencies that will affect Hunts Point
• Stop the city's proposed construction of a 2,000-bed jail at the Oak Point site in Hunts Point.
• Maintain a blog and channel on YouTube Performing a live online audio-visual performance with youth from Bristol, England.
Action has created a blog, huntspointaction.blogspot.com, and also a channel on
YouTube, “thepointaction”, that we will be using to reach a wider audience with our message.
BRONX-BRISTOL AUDIO-VISUAL PROJECT
Action youth are participating in a live audio-visual mixing project using a unique online mixing platform with youth from Bristol, England. At the conclusion of the project the two groups will perform a live concert of their mixes simultaneously in the two countries.

ONLINE MAGAZINE
ACTION is working on the creation of an online informative magazine. The magazine is divided into four sections focusing on teen and family issue. Each
section will continue news, feature, and opinion pieces, as well as relevant statistics. The topics are STD’s and sexual health, domestic violence, new laws and policies, and family structure changes.
ANTI-TOBACCO LEGISLATION
In 2006 A.C.T.I.O.N. partnered with The American Lung Association (ALA) in order to fight big tobacco’s advertising aimed at our youth. We want to make our
community a better place to live and grow up in. Many youth inhabit the Hunts Point community and are easily influenced by all the tobacco marketing they see
around them as well as the people who are already smokers. We wish to stop the targeting of our youth in hopes to prevent them from becoming future smokers and
from becoming just another statistic.
Together with ALA and councilman Joel Rivera, Initiative 433 was introduced as a bill to ban the sale of flavored-tobacco products in New York City. During this campaign ACTION has taken surveys in their community on the prevalence of cigarette smoking and marketing, as well as collected hundreds of endorsement cards in support of the legislation. ACTION has participated in two press conferences at
City Hall on this issue, and testified at the first hearing on Intro 433. While we await the second hearing, ALA and the NYC Coalition for a Smoke Free City are working to redraft the bill.
COMMUNITY IN UNITY
ACTION members have been working as a part of the Community In Unity coalition to stop the city’s proposed plans to build a 2,000-bed jail at the Oak Point site in Hunts Point. ACTION has attended public meetings and hearings with local elected officials, Department of Corrections commissioner Martin Horn, and City Council Speaker Christie Quinn. ACTION has also done outreach work and distributed fliers to the community informing them of this issue, and collected signatures in opposition to the jail.
RE-INVISIONING HUNTS POINT
ACTION participated in a community charrette to help plan for the future development of Hunts Point. The DEP’s waste water treatment plant located in Hunts
Point is undergoing a major renovation and upgrade, and this charrette was a workshop and discussion about how the mitigation funds from the DEP should be spent to better our community.
