In House Student’s Portfolio
Minds Empowered is a youth-led art program exploring mental health and life experiences through creative expression, workshops, and discussion. Featured projects include health awareness posters now on display at The Point.
About
This term, Minds Empowered focused on creating art based on personal experiences with mental health and other life challenges. Students engaged in deep conversations about what it's like to be a teen or young adult in today’s world. During our Black History Month event, they led workshops such as mask-making inspired by African tribal and other cultural traditions. They also hosted a “Deep Talk” workshop where students and The Point staff shared their perspectives on being a teen versus an adult. The final goal for M.E. this year was to create posters about men’s and women’s health, both of which are now on display at The Point.

Creativity
• Brainstorming unique design ideas
• Sketching and refining artwork for printing
• Choosing colors, shapes and layout
Patience
• Let screens dry
• Apply ink carefully
• Repeating steps if something goes wrong
Teamwork
• Share tools
• Helping each other with screen setup or cleanup
• Giving and receiving feedback on designs
• Work in groups
Step 1: Design Creation
Students begin by sketching or creating their own artwork or message, often using paper or digital tools. This is the creative phase where ideas take shape.
Step 2: Screen Preparation
Their design is transferred onto a screen using a stencil or light-sensitive emulsion. This step involves carefully setting up the screen so it can accurately hold the image.
Step 3: Printing the Design
Using ink and a squeegee, students press the ink through the screen and onto fabric or paper. This is where the design becomes a printed piece.
